What Is SAP Customer Activity Repository (SAP CAR)?

SAP Customer Activity Repository (SAP CAR) is a retail solution that consolidates sales and POS data across channels. It provides a consistent data foundation for demand forecasting, promotion pricing, stock availability and omnichannel processes such as click and collect.

Key facts

Key facts

  • SAP Customer Activity Repository (SAP CAR) is a retail-specific SAP application that runs on SAP HANA and works alongside SAP S/4HANA Retail. It is not a general-purpose data warehouse.
  • SAP CAR’s core capabilities include POS data transfer and audit, demand forecasting, omnichannel availability and sourcing, and promotion pricing.
  • SAP CAR is designed for retailers with many stores, high transaction volumes and several sales channels.
  • Typical SAP CAR use cases are inventory visibility, demand forecasting and omnichannel fulfillment such as click and collect or ship-from-store.
  • SAP Customer Activity Repository complements your ERP, BI layer and data platform. It does not replace them.

Why SAP Customer Activity Repository matters for retailers

Why SAP Customer Activity Repository matters for retailers

In many retail companies, POS data, web shop orders and warehouse stock are held in separate systems. Online shops then show items as available that are already sold out in the store, forecasts leave out online demand, and POS data reaches the back office late or with errors.

SAP CAR addresses this at the data level. It brings sales and inventory-relevant data into one repository and makes it usable for planning and customer-facing processes.

SAP CAR benefits and business value in practice:

  • Fewer stockouts and less overstock, because forecasts are based on consolidated sales data from all channels
  • Reliable omnichannel promises, because availability checks draw on current stock across stores, warehouses and suppliers
  • Cleaner POS data, because transactions are validated before they feed reporting and accounting
  • Consistent promotions across channels, because pricing is calculated centrally
  • Customer insights across channels, because transaction history from stores and online shops can be analyzed in one place

How SAP CAR works

How SAP CAR works

SAP CAR receives transaction and master data from stores, e-commerce and ERP systems. It validates and stores this data in a common model on SAP HANA. Other SAP and non-SAP applications then draw on it: forecasting, availability checks, promotion pricing and sales analytics.

The main components of SAP CAR

The main components of SAP CAR

SAP CAR architecture is modular. The following components cover its core retail processes:

Component What it does
POS Data Transfer & Audit (POSDTA) Captures, validates and corrects POS transactions from all channels before they move on to ERP and analytics
Demand Data Foundation (DDF) Demand Data Foundation (DDF) Provides the consolidated sales and master data basis for all demand-related functions
Unified Demand Forecast (UDF) Calculates demand forecasts from sales history and influencing factors such as promotions, assortment changes or store openings
Omnichannel Article Availability and Sourcing (OAA) Shows where an item is available (store, warehouse, supplier) and supports click and collect, ship-from-store and endless aisle
Omnichannel Promotion Pricing (OPP) Calculates prices and promotions consistently across channels
On-Shelf Availability On-Shelf Availability Monitors whether products are actually on the shelf and flags gaps

SAP CAR and omnichannel retail

SAP CAR and omnichannel retail

Omnichannel means that customers can switch between store, web shop and app without noticing any gaps in price, availability or service. SAP CAR supports this mainly through OAA and OPP. A customer orders online, the system finds the best source for the item, and the customer picks it up in the store of their choice. That only works if stock and sales data from all channels are consistent, which is the job of the repository underneath.

SAP CAR and inventory visibility

SAP CAR and inventory visibility

SAP Customer Activity Repository makes the stock position from your ERP usable across channels. The OAA component does this by combining current stock data with open orders and sourcing rules, so online shops, store systems and service staff see the same availability.

SAP CAR vs. related SAP solutions

SAP CAR vs. related SAP solutions

SAP CAR is frequently compared with SAP BW, SAP S/4HANA Retail and SAP Datasphere. The following table shows the main purpose of each solution and how it relates to SAP CAR:

Main purpose Relationship to SAP CAR
SAP BW General-purpose data warehouse for reporting and analytics across all business areas SAP CAR is retail-specific and includes processes (POS audit, forecasting, availability). Data from SAP CAR can feed a BW or BI landscape for enterprise reporting.
SAP S/4HANA Retail General-purpose data warehouse for reporting and analytics across all business areas SAP CAR complements the ERP with cross-channel data and omnichannel functions. It does not replace it.
SAP Datasphere Cloud data platform for integrating and harmonizing SAP and non-SAP data A data platform for enterprise-wide data. SAP CAR is an application with built-in retail logic. The two can coexist.

Rule of thumb: use S/4HANA Retail to run the business, SAP CAR to connect channels and forecast demand, and BW or Datasphere to analyze data across the enterprise.

Do you need SAP CAR?

Do you need SAP CAR?

SAP CAR is usually worth evaluating if:

  • you sell through several channels and need one availability view
  • you run many stores with high POS volumes
  • forecast quality or stock levels are a recurring problem
  • you plan omnichannel services such as click and collect or ship-from-store

It is usually not the right tool if you sell through a single channel, have a small store network, or only need reporting. In that case, a BI or data platform is often sufficient.

FAQ

SAP CAR is used to consolidate retail sales and POS data and to run demand forecasting, omnichannel availability checks and promotion pricing on that data.

It receives data from stores, online channels and ERP, validates it and stores it in a common model on SAP HANA. Forecasting, availability and pricing functions then use that data.

It provides the basis for it. The OAA component calculates availability across stores, warehouses and suppliers from current stock and order data. How current the result is depends on how often your source systems send updates.

SAP BW is a general data warehouse for reporting. SAP CAR is a retail application with its own processes, such as POS audit, forecasting and availability checks. They are often used together.

SAP also offers cloud services for individual SAP CAR functions: SAP Order Management for sourcing and availability, the SAP Omnichannel Promotion Pricing Service and SAP Omnichannel Sales Transfer and Audit. Retailers can adopt these capabilities without the full SAP CAR solution.
