In comparison, SAP S/4HANA has roughly half the number of lines of code, data elements, and tables as SAP ERP 6.0. This “simplified” structure (also reflected in the “S” for “Simple” in its name) results not only in faster response times, but also in reduced maintenance effort and a higher pace of innovation.
SAP has also improved the role and authorization system: users are now granted access only to the applications that are actually relevant to them.
Despite its advantages, SAP S/4HANA also has a few drawbacks. These primarily include the investment costs associated with transitioning to the new system.
However, the many benefits of the new system (greater efficiency, higher speed, and the use of digital innovations and technologies) generally mean that these costs are quickly amortized.
In other words, companies that delay the transition for too long—or do not undertake it at all—are likely to face competitive disadvantages in the long term, potentially resulting in declining revenues and market share.
As with any major system change, the transition also requires users to adapt to the new environment. Due to the significantly simplified and user-friendly interface, as well as the streamlined system structure, this adaptation process is usually manageable.
